Residence for IT professionals
There is no universal separate IT residence card. Developers, analysts and engineers need a route that matches their actual working arrangement. Review the contract, qualifications, place of work and plans to move between employment and B2B.
Conditions
What needs checking
Choose between employment, the EU Blue Card and your own business.
Your arrangement is identified as employment under a contract or your own business activity.
Blue Card eligibility is assessed separately against qualifications, occupation and remuneration.
Remote work and overseas clients are considered in light of how the work is actually organised in Poland.
Compare
How the routes differ
This comparison helps focus a case review. It does not replace checking every condition of the selected procedure.
| Route | Key question | Example evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Residence through employment | Work is the main purpose of your stay, and your current status permits this application. | Contract and employer's attachment with matching employment terms. |
| EU Blue Card | The role requires higher qualifications, demonstrated through an accepted form of evidence. | Diploma or detailed professional experience evidence, with required translations. |
| Residence through business | You are entitled to use the chosen business form, and the activity justifies your stay. | Tax returns, financial results, client contracts and employment records. |

Process
From your circumstances to the next step
Identify the route
Your current status, purpose of stay and previous decisions determine the focus of the review.
Gather evidence
Use the route-specific document list. Flag missing documents and inconsistencies in personal details.
Prepare submission
Follow the authority's current procedure. Keep proof of submission; the applicant completes any required personal steps.
Respond to requests
Check official correspondence, response deadlines and any need to update documents when circumstances change.
Review the decision
Check its wording, subsequent obligations and, where necessary, the appeal procedure.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does every developer qualify for a Blue Card?
No. The profession alone is insufficient: qualifications, contract terms and the applicable salary threshold must be checked.
Is an overseas contract enough for residence?
The contract's label does not determine a route. Where and how you actually work needs an individual review.
Are B2B and employment interchangeable?
No. Moving between them can change the residence basis, obligations and required documents.
