Polish citizenship
Recognition as a Polish citizen (uznanie za obywatela polskiego) is decided by a voivode under statutory conditions. A grant of citizenship (nadanie obywatelstwa polskiego) is at the discretion of the President of Poland. We help identify the relevant procedure, review your residence history and prepare documents for your circumstances.
Conditions
What needs checking
Eligibility review and application preparation for recognition by a voivode or a presidential grant.
Recognition requires the permanent status specified for your statutory ground: a permanent residence permit, an EU long-term resident permit or the right of permanent residence. Required periods and continuity, including absences, must be checked; temporary residence alone is insufficient.
Conditions differ for spouses of Polish citizens, people with permanent residence based on Polish origin or a Pole's Card, refugees, stateless people and minors. A stable, regular source of income and a legal entitlement to occupy accommodation are not required under every ground.
Recognition requires statutory evidence of Polish-language knowledge: an official certificate at B1 or above, or an accepted school-completion document. An exemption applies to specific categories of minors.
A presidential application needs reasons and evidence supporting the circumstances described. The conditions for recognition by a voivode do not carry over to this procedure; a complete application does not create an entitlement to citizenship.
Documents
Start preparing your documents
This is a preparation guide, not an exhaustive official checklist. Confirm the form, submission method, translations and authentication of foreign documents for the particular procedure.
Discuss my situation- The form for the chosen procedure, current photographs and evidence of any required payment under the receiving authority's instructions.
- A passport or another accepted identity and citizenship document; residence documents, decisions and absence records relevant to the chosen ground.
- Polish civil-registry copies of birth and, where relevant, marriage records; documents concerning changes of personal details, relatives' citizenship and parental responsibility.
- For recognition: accepted language evidence, plus evidence of income and the right to occupy accommodation where required by your ground.
- For a presidential grant: reasons for applying and evidence of ties to Poland, means of support, professional or community activity. Translation and copy-certification requirements are checked separately; foreign documents need the required Polish sworn-translator or consular translation.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do marriage, a Pole's Card or Polish roots already give me citizenship?
No, none of these alone means you have acquired citizenship. Recognition requires the relevant statutory basis and residence conditions. If citizenship may have passed from a parent, first check whether the separate procedure for confirming existing citizenship is appropriate.
Must I take a B1 exam?
Recognition permits an official certificate at B1 or above, or a statutory school-completion document. A policealna post-secondary school certificate does not establish language knowledge for proceedings started after 30 June 2026; transitional rules must be checked for earlier cases. The language exemption covers minors under Article 30(1)(4) and (5) of the Citizenship Act. A presidential grant has no equivalent mandatory certificate requirement.
Where do I apply?
Apply for recognition to the voivode for your place of residence. A presidential application goes through the competent voivode or Polish consul. People living abroad, and those staying in Poland on a visa or under visa-free arrangements, apply through a consul; check jurisdiction and submission requirements beforehand.
Can my child be included?
Parental responsibility, the child's citizenship and documents need checking. If one parent acquires citizenship, the other parent's consent or evidence that they do not hold parental responsibility is generally needed. A minor who has reached 16 must also give their own consent.
When will I receive an outcome?
We do not promise a completion date. Recognition is subject to procedural time limits and extension rules, while actual processing depends on the case. There is no statutory deadline for a presidential grant; a complete application does not guarantee faster processing.
Can a refusal be appealed?
A voivode's recognition decision can be appealed to MSWiA through the voivode, following the time limit and instructions in the decision. A presidential decision granting or refusing citizenship cannot be appealed. The procedures and available next steps differ.
